If you live on the Outer Banks, NC, then you know we've been getting quite the rainfall these past couple of days. I mean seriously, it's been raining for like the past week! But hey, we're not complaining because that just means some of you could have saved some money.
You might be wondering, "how in the world does rain save me money?" Well if you have a rain sensor with your irrigation system, then you certainly saved a penny or two these past couple of days. But to learn how, first we need to talk about what irrigation is.
WHAT IS IRRIGATION?
Irrigation is the supply of water to land and/or crops to help growth. This is typically done by means of channels. An example of this would be a sprinkler system. It's a great way to keep your lawn looking revived and healthy. These systems are especially helpful during the summer time here on the OBX with the level of heat we receive. However not all people opt to go for an irrigation system. Some people would prefer to just "let mother nature do the watering". For those who do opt for irrigation, there is something you should consider adding to your system if you don't have it already, and that's a rain sensor.
WHAT'S A RAIN SENSOR?
A rain sensor essentially determines if a sufficient amount of rainfall has occurred to skip the irrigation cycle. It's really a good idea to install sensors that limit the sprinkler system from running in the rain, because that's obviously not necessary. They work when a significant amount of rainwater prompts the sensor, then the electrical link that's between the sensor and the system controller is suspended. The sensor then interrupts the electrical connection to stop the electricity from running to either the sprinkler valves or to a pump start.
SO HOW DOES THIS SAVE ME MONEY?
Well if you've got a rain sensor, this accumulation of rainfall will keep your irrigation system from completing it's cycle until it's necessary. Meaning, you're not wasting water or your money but you're also making sure your grass and/or plants are not over watered.
So let's look on the positive side. Yes, it rained a TON this week. BUT some of you either saved money, or (if you don't have an irrigation system) you now have a very happy and refreshed yard.
